Such a legendary machine. Regarding the foam padding, check out how mobile phone cases work. The material behaves more like sand, in that it can be pushed gently, to move, but, when hit hard, it stays firm. Most of these materials are proprietary, however, you could get some sponsorship from a case manufacturer and get them to help you out with battery protection. Laptop cases have the same materials, so you could buy one, chop it up, see how well it works and then approach a mobile phone accessory manufacturer. I am sure they would love to reach a young audience with their logo on the legendary tombstone.

Tombstone and Icewave are my favorite battlebots.

There are gods in battlebots and tombstone is who they fear. The size of that blade is astounding.

The first time i get to hear that massive blade rev up and than see it rip into a bot im gunna lose my shit. A dream come true to relive this glory.

You might be able to use an SSR (solid state relay) to switch the main weapon motor, provided that you can find one with a suitable switching curent. They don't have any moving parts and won't bind shut. They are also pretty compact.

There are so many channels and streaming platforms and so on. They are all in desperate need of programming. I cannot believe Battlebots cannot get a contract with somebody.

i saw battle bots and the UK series "robot wars" (not as good) on TV as a kid here in new zealand - now i'm 31 years old and man this is awesome. It's UFC for engineers and nerds. been binge watching robot fighting all day and super hyped for the new tournament!

I'm surprised it's running a brushed motor. I thought Permanent magnet BLDC are just better in every way now with advanced speed controllers.

I just had a look at the Requerments for Australia & it look like you can carry up to 20 batteries under 100Wh's, so there is some restrictions but not too bad. But like yiu were saying Do your home work before flying.

Hi Ray! i see you took my suggestion of changing your profile picture! but more importantly... ITYS THE RETURN OF OUR KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

A few suggestions: 1- Wheels positioning: why not move away from the motor assembled on the wheel concept? It requires rubber shock mounting and messes up the center of mass. So an idea could be to mount the wheels directly on the chassis, so you could position them more accurately and wouldn't need the shock mounts anymore, and have the motor mounted a little backward to help the balancing and coupled to the wheels via short chain loops that would also help mitigating the torque shocks, that on a bot like Tombstone are immense. 2- Wheels: they're iconic, good looking and grippy, but it seems they're starting to not be enough anymore to handle all the pushing and sideways forces and overall increased power of Tombstone. Tombstone probably needs wheels with even higher surface area. But then they'd be too heavy. A solution could be to build custom wheels in shape similar to F1 ones, so empty in the inside and with a wider rubber area contacting the floor. Same diameter, same diamond texture pattern which is great for grip, but a little wider without weighting more. Obviously they wouldn't be inflated with foam anymore, just a thick rubber coating over the metal rim, i don't know if i explained it clearly. It would also make them more resistant to glancing blows. 3- Weapon tips: the weapon tips should really have a positive rake angle. Right now it's negative and even in the aluminium + S7 inserts it was only neutral. It's important because the more it bites on impact the less it tends to "slip" and so the less force is transferred back to Tombostone, helping it slipping and bouncing away less on impacts and delivering more damage to the opponent.

Try using liquid nitrogen to extinguish of fire from battery, ordinary fire extinguisher won't work and more dangerous to use water

@ray - i had always wondered if you could regen brake the weapon motor to slow it down after some of those hits that cause a gyro?

The RUclips tournament, sounds like something fans of the sport around the world will really enjoy! Hopefully its a step in the right direction.

The move to RUclips will see such a boost in international viewership. It's damn near impossible to watch battlebots currently in some countries (in a way that promotes the continued production of the series).

At least we know BATTLEBOTS is not out for the count, as they still working on a TV contract. But I'll be looking forward to see a mini-tournament seeing Tombstone's Comeback Return.

I wonder if Ray has plans to adjust the weapon too, because the robot seemed to struggle a bit against opponents with a strong wedge. Cool to see tombstone in the workshop. I love seeing it in action in battle bots

Ray, there might be a handling advantage if you try a pair of Go-Kart slicks. They should be a stickier tire and even with the mods, I can't see better traction doing anything but adding maneuverability.

If it's gonna be on RUclips, I hope that Google will sponsor the event. With the wide variety of Google products, it should improve the popularity of Battlebots worldwide.

Great Ray. Happy to hear Tombstone is returning. I have been a fan of Tombstone since Season 2 and recently found your channel. I think Battlebots moving in the RUclips direction will be good, as the country I am in right now don't show Battlebots on any of the main stream channels. I saw bits of season 2 and 3 on TV while I was in another country but anything else from other seasons I saw were on RUclips. Also, I got a question about the battery layout. I don't know about electronics, wiring, circuits etc so I apologize if these are silly questions. Do you normally have a separate battery for weapon and separate for drive or do you normally have one set that powers all? If you do have two sets, would it be good to put a 'firewall', made out of the same material as the sides of the frame, in the back compartment to separate the weapon battery from the drive battery? Would that be better in case of a fire. Maybe that way if one burns down you still have the other and maybe you can divert some of the power from the surviving battery into the system that no longer has power? (Even I am not sure if that is possible but just a thought that came to mind)...I know you mentioned using two small batteries rather than a chunky one in the air travel video so maybe if you physically separate those of the same system as well you might still be able to drive with half power for example? (I am staying this assuming the plastic for the 3D printed box is flammable, so sorry if I am wrong on that). Also, wouldn't the foam just spread a fire more? Also, would you still be able to attach the big red and grey blade with the teeth (from the blade types video) if you move the wheels forwards? Again, I don't have knowledge on these so sorry if some of these were silly questions.
